The Future of the Florida Georgia Game

Updated: Jul 15, 2023

The University of Florida and Georgia athletic departments recently released a joint statement concerning the future of the Florida Georgia Game. The statement was cryptic in tone and was largely devoid of specific details. But it does appear that the University of Florida and Georgia are still committed to playing the rivalry game, as they were in 2012.

Both teams were ranked in the AP poll with only one loss each. They both had strong defenses and ball-control offenses. The game was low-scoring with few points scored in the first half. Georgia's running back Todd Gurley scored on the Bulldogs' first possession of the game, giving the Bulldogs an early 7-0 lead. That score would prove to be the only touchdown Georgia would score throughout the game.

The series began as an annual rivalry in 1928. Both teams were members of the Southern Conference at that time. Since then, the two teams have been tied seven times. The series now includes four different cities - Atlanta, Athens, Gainesville, and Tallahassee. Here are a few facts you may not know about Georgia.

Georgia is the defending national champion. Although Florida Georgia is a favored team, the Gators are struggling to qualify for a bowl game. They have a 1-3 record in SEC play and are currently at a stalemate. Moreover, they will be facing the No. 1 team in the country in the SEC.
